Healthy Tacos: our ingredients and helpful tools

Ground turkey, beans, plain Greek yogurt and two serving choices, plus optional kitchen tools for the same jobs.

Our version of Healthy Tacos brings together seasoned ground turkey, black beans, refried pinto beans, shredded Mexican blend cheese and plain Greek yogurt in place of sour cream. We served it two ways: a spinach-and-herb tortilla and a romaine leaf.

Our cooked ground turkey and bean filling served in a spinach-and-herb tortilla and a romaine leaf, with yogurt, salsa and cheese on a blue plate.
Two serving choices from our own cooking session.

Ingredients in our version

  • Ground turkey: we used H-E-B 80/20.
  • Taco Bell Original taco seasoning.
  • SOMOS Traditional Refried Pinto Beans.
  • Black beans, added separately to the turkey.
  • H-E-B shredded Mexican Style Blend cheese.
  • H-E-B whole-milk plain Greek yogurt.
  • Romaine leaves.
  • Mission Carb Balance Spinach & Herb tortillas.
  • Your preferred salsa: our photos show Central Market Black Bean, Corn & Cilantro Salsa, Medium.

This is an ingredient and serving guide for our filmed version. We did not record exact batch quantities or a measured serving yield. Choose portions and additions that work for you.

Tortilla or romaine?

Use a tortilla for one serving style, or a whole romaine leaf as the wrap. Romaine can also be chopped as a topping. Our creamy finishing touch is plain Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. Salsa and other extras are optional.

Tools for the same kitchen jobs

Use tools you already have. If you need something, the options below cover browning and breaking up the turkey, keeping utensils together, and preparing the romaine. These are researched alternatives; they are not confirmed as the exact brands or models in our footage and have not been personally tested by OtK.

Tramontina Professional 12-inch Nonstick Frying Pan

A roomy pan gives the filling space to cook. This 12-inch option is a frying-pan alternative; use a deeper pan when your batch needs more capacity. This aluminum model is for gas and conventional electric cooking, not induction. It is shallower than the pan in our photos.
